9 October 2011 at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University: The Most Ven. Prof. Dr. Phra Dharmakosajarn, as rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and president of the International Council for Day of Vesak, said as a result of the Eight United Nation Day of Vesak was held in Thailand from 12-14 May 2011 under the theme "Buddhist Virtues in Socio-Economic Development" in conjunction with the auspicious occasion of the 84th Birthday of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulayadej of Thailand at the main campus of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyala University and UNCC Hall in Bangkok with the total of 5,000 people from 85 countries. From the joint statement of the meeting agreed that they will not yet assign any country to be the host for the celebration of the 9th United Nations Day of Vesak 2012, as this year will be one of the important year to commemorate the 2600th anniversary of Buddha's Enlightenment.
On 8-9 October 2011 at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, the board of the International Council for Day of Vesak has been chosen a host for Day of Vesak between Sri lanka and Thailand. The meeting approved a resolution to authorize Thailand to be host for the celebration of the 9th United Nations Day of Vesak 2012. International Council for Day of Vesak (ICDV) has decided that 2012 (BE 2555) United Nations Day of Vesak celebration will be a special occasion celebrating 2600 Sambuddha Jayanti, the 80th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen and the 60th Birthday of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.
The main purposes for the 9th United Nations Day of Vesak 2012 was held to celebrate the 2600th anniversary of Buddha's Enlightenment under the theme of The event will be held in Ayutthaya and Bangkok, Thailand from 31 May to 2 June 2012. The schedule will be as follow.
On 31 May 2012 will be opening ceremony of the 9th United Nations Day of Vesak at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Wang noi, Ayutthaya, Thailand.

On 2 June 2012 is the speech from leading scholars and Buddhist leaders from all of the Buddhist traditions around the world at The United Nations Conference Center at Thanon Ratchadamnoen Nok, Bangkok. In the evening, the leading scholars and Buddhist leaders will go to make Candlelit procession at Phutthamonthon, Nakhon Pathom province.
In addition to the seminars, there are also the cultural show from countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand as well.
The thrice-sacred day of Vesak, Celebrating the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing away of Buddha Gautama, has been recognized by the United Nations in adopting a resolution at its General Assembly in 1999. With the blessing of the Supreme Sangha Council and the Royal Thai Government have been assigned Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) to be host for this event for 7 times.
