14 May 2011: Dr.Sumet Tantivejakul, secretary general of the Chaipattana Foundation delivered a special lecture on "Buddhist Virtues in Socio-Economic Development in the footsteps of His Majesty the King" and lauded him as "Dhammaraja" to celebrate H.M. the King's 84th birthday in the 8th Conference of the United Nations Day of Vesak at the ESCAP conference hall, United Nations.

The special lecture on "Buddhist Virtues in Socio-Economic Development in the footsteps of His Majesty the King" was given on the last day of the conference with contents citing: "Nowadays the consumption of people has a profound effect on natural resources all over the world. At the same time vices, lust and greed is the source of damages and sufferings. Development should keep in mind the benefits which come after. For His Majesty the King, he uses Dhamma in guiding Thailand from the first day he ascended the throne. As can be seen from his royal pledge to "govern the land in Dhamma for the benefit of the people of Siam", he practices the ten Dhamma principles for government which does not emphasize on accumulating riches which will create problems in society as is relevant in our world today. If we use Dhamma in our lives as His Majesty the King adviced, to live a simple life of "adequate, sufficient, balanced" we will live together in peace. We will be mindful, cautious and use wisdom in managing natural resources and be able to maintain the fertile abundance".

The conference declared H.M. the King to be a "Dhammaraja" of which Dr.Sumet further said that apart from being a Dhammaraja His Majesty carries out his royal activities with total dedication as well as applies Dhamma in those tasks as is apparent in the Sufficient Economy Philosophy and the solutions to his subjects' problems.

"His Majesty has been sacrificing physically for his subjects in his work; one day His Majesty summoned a working group and said that he was taking us out which was in fact a field trip to Klong Makkasan that was choked with water hyacinth plants and polluted water. He said that Good and Evil cannot exist together meaning the plants and the polluted water being the evil. He said we must use the sun, which is like Dhamma, to solve the problem by putting it in between. In the end, Klong Makkasan could produce water for channeling to Klong Lad Prao simply because the plants were pushed aside to let the sun rays create oxygen to treat the pollution without utilizing any machinery. This reflects that His Majesty applies Dhamma in development regularly". .
